The Fosseway Artists

After living in Wiltshire and teaching in primary school Vivien moved to Gloucester where she continues to be inspired by the dock area with it’s light and water reflections being a prominent feature of her work. Her Tall Ship paintings and Dock scenes have proved to be very popular in exhibitions in the Gloucestershire area.

In July 2016 Vivien's painting ‘Here Today’ won the main award in the Gloucester ‘Art in the City’ competition.

At the present time Vivien is a member of the ‘Gloucester Society of Artists’, ‘The Landsdown Art Club’, ‘The Fosseway Artists online’ and also currently a committee member of ‘Painswick Art Group’.

Vivien's primary medium is watercolour and her paintings aim to capture light and atmosphere and give a sense of time and place.

Vivien Townsend

Vivien studied art in Gloucester in the early 1970’s and then went on to teach art in adult education in various counties in England.

Vivien lived in Devon and Cornwall for some years where the landscapes inspired her to paint in watercolour and to capture the atmosphere of the coast, moors and misty estuaries, she was a founder member of the ‘Plymouth Watercolour Society’.

Following her move to Surrey in the late 1980’s she taught art for Guildford Adult Education where she had successful exhibitions of watercolours and pastels in the Guildford area, one notable success was the Guilford Borough Council Calendar competition for local artists where Vivien’s ‘Village Snow Scene’ was the winning painting which was then printed on the front cover of the 1992 calendar also receiving a presentation by Tony Hart the well known television artist.
